It's a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack.

Happy Pi Day!

Pi Day is an annual celebration commemorating the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 (or 3/14 in the U.S. month/day date format), since 3, 1, and 4 are the three most significant digits of π in the decimal form. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day. [And you thought the House couldn't get anything done!]

In the year 2015, Pi Day will have special significance on 3/14/15 at 9:26:53 a.m. and p.m., with the date and time representing the first 10 digits of π.

Pi Approximation Day is observed on July 22 (or 22/7 in the day/month date format), since the fraction 227 is a common approximation of π.

Well, you get the idea.

You deserve a break today!

According to CNN (December 25, 2014) McDonald's tells its employees not to eat the food they sell to customers.

Why not?

McDonald's doesn't think its employees should eat the food they serve because it is not healthy. The fast food giant has advised employees to avoid meals with burgers and fries and to eat healthier options like salad and sandwiches.

On McDonald's employees' website, there was a warning and an alternative. The McResource Line website went viral and has since been taken down after so many negative comments.

A graphic that was on McDonald's employees website before it was taken down shows a typical McDonald's meal: a cheeseburger, fries and drink under the caption "Unhealthy choice." Next to it is a picture of what McDonald's advises its employees to eat: sub, a salad and water under the caption "Healthier choice."

While McDonald's sells the unhealthy choice to its customers, McDonald's employees have been advised not to eat what they sell.

It is quite interesting that McDonald's wants its employees to be healthy, however, the fast food chain advertises and promotes its unhealthy foods for customers to buy. For instance, McDonald's sells a vast array of deep fried delicacies while reminding employees that "avoiding items that are deep fried are your best bet."

The sensible advice also tells employees to "limit the extras such as cheese, bacon and mayonnaise." However, these extras are on the menu at McDonald's.

This is ironic because many of McDonald's stores offer food discounts and short breaks to employees, virtually forcing them to eat the unhealthy foods where they work. Employees don't have the time or means to leave work and eat at places that offer healthier choices even though McDonald's website advises its employees:
"Eat at places that offer a variety of salads, soups, and vegetables."

Dowry

1 Samuel 18:25
And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

Aren't you glad that one didn't stay in the lawbooks!

BTW, some Biblical sites online claim that there is no evidence in the Bible of grooms purchasing their brides. The fact that one does not find the words "A bride costs XXX" does not prove their claim. There are plenty of references to dowries and so on.

Imagine!

TMI QUESTIONS: HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY 2014!

I haven't done any of these, but Sean (The Jeep Guy) posts them periodically and I thought I'd jump in.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!
1. Do you have any Irish in you? Would you like some?

Although my own family roots are ultimately Welsh, the family moved into England and Ireland many centuries ago. So I imagine I have some Irish DNA in there, along with the Cherokee and other assorted folks.
2. Do you wear green?

I wear green for St. Patrick's Day. When I was growing up in the Bible Belt, there was a tradition of pinching anyone who didn't have on green for St. Patrick. Since everyone was terribly, terribly, terrfyingly Protestant, I am not sure how this custom arose or hung on.
3. Green beer is...
disgusting. So is dying the river green in Chicago or making green mashed potatoes.
4. Irish coffee is...
nice, but no longer an option for health reasons.
5. Have you worn a kilt?
No, but for years in the seminary I wore long robes. I have considered getting a kilt. In all humility, I think I have the legs to carry it off.

6. Have you gone to the NY St. Patrick's Day Parade?

No, and I have no interest, even if they were to become gay-friendly.
7. St. Patrick chased the snakes out of Ireland with a stick. How would you handle snakes?
Real snakes? I would take a hoe to them. That's what we did when I was growing up. Metaphorical snakes? Depends ...

BONUS
I'm 100% Irish. Would you kiss me?
I would kiss you even if you weren't.

And almost a century later, still true!

It reminds me of that wonderful line from the Mary Poppins song, "Sister Suffragette."

While we adore men individually,
We agree that as a group
they're rather stupid.
